∽ DIALER 2000 ∼

When Windows 95 came out, connecting to the Internet became easier but the frustration of always getting disconnected due to various issues with a phone line became too great, thus Dialer 2000 was born. Yes, in 1995.

This small application was initially built only for my own private use, but I decided to put it online and see if other people would like to buy it. A mere hour after building a really horrible website and putting Dialer 2000 on sale for the modest price of $9.95, I had my first sale! Hi Steven!

It turned out that a lot of people were in the same boat as me because Dialer 2000 was a hit! It became so popular that it had reviews on more shareware sites than we could count, and when our little app was featured in BYTE magazine, the increase in popularity of the app drove a massive number of clones to try and imitate Dialer 2000!

It was a good try, but Dialer 2000 was king and went on to sell for more than 10 years before the DSL and cable connections began to make the phone lines obsolete for connecting to the Internet!

The success of Dialer 2000 came from the amount of support we gave to our users. Dialer 2000 started as a window with nothing more than a dropbox and a button. Every single feature added after that was from user requests.

BYTE magazine called it the swiss army knife of Windows dialers! You could be notified of new emails, set periods of the day when the connection should be on or off, launch programs on connection, monitor duration for people on metered connections... The list of features is endless!

Dialer 2000 was pirated, a lot! But it turned out that releasing constant updates, almost one every week, with new features, tweaks and fixes made people much more willing to purchase it. We even noticed pirates giving up trying to stay current and just buying the app and be done with poorly cracked copies!

Dialer 2000, I remember you fondly!
